Cooperation in a fragmented society: Experimental evidence on Syrian refugees and natives in Lebanon

Lebanon is the country with highest density of refugees in world, raising question whether host and refugee populations can cooperate harmoniously. We conduct a lab-in-the-field experiment studying intra- inter-group behavior Syrian Lebanese nationals repeated public goods game without punishment. randomly assign participants to Lebanese-only, Syrian-only, or mixed sessions. find that formed pairs homogeneous sessions, on average, contribute punish significantly more than those suggesting in-group cooperation stronger. These patterns are driven by participants. Further analysis indicates groups strongly conditioned expectations about partner's groups.
